Family Physicians offering maternity care
Some family physicians in the Campbell River area offer maternity care to their own patients while others refer their patients to another physician to over that care in pregnancy. If your regular doctor does not offer prenatal care, you can go to the Campbell River Maternity Clinic which offers a team of rotating doctors on call or to Maternity at Quinsam which offers doctors who directly attach to pregnant person throughout their pregnancy and labour. The first step is to talk to your primary care provider about it and they will refer you if necessary. If you don’t have a physician, visit the Campbell River and District Division of Family Practice for an up-to-date listing of physicians accepting new patients, or see a walk-in clinic doctor for a referral to one of these clinic options.
Note: Public Health attends the Maternity Clinic every Tuesday afternoon.
Midwifery Care
Ocean Grove Midwifery was established in 1998 by Sheila Jager, RM. She was one of the first midwives licensed in BC, running the clinic out of her own house. From there, the clinic moved to the “Little Yellow House” on Thulin street where it grew to support 4 midwives. In 2019 the clinic moved to where it now resides, in the lower level of Alder Medical Clinic.
Ocean Grove Midwifery Collective is home to all the midwives practicing in Campbell River. Midwives are primary care providers during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postpartum period. Midwives in Campbell River serve families from North Island, the Discovery Islands, and south to Black Creek. Check out their website at oceangrovemidwiferycare.com to book into care.
Midwifery services through North Island Midwifery are also available in Port Hardy and Port McNeill.
Obstetricians (OB)
In the Campbell River and District, an Obstetrician does not typically provide primary maternity care but will act as a consultant to your Family Doctor or Registered Midwife if you experience complications or if your pregnancy becomes higher risk (like twins, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, or other health concerns). OBs are doctors with special education and training in the medical management of pregnancy, labour, and birth and they are qualified to manage complications.
Birth and After Birth Support
Doulas provide emotional support before, during, and after birth. Please note that doulas are present at births in an emotional capacity and deliveries are done with a family doctor, obstetrician, or midwife. Costs for doulas are not covered by the BC Medical Services Plan but may be covered with Aboriginal status. If applicable, ask your band office for more information.
